Weather Systems

David  Smart, Research Associate, at the Department of Earth Sciences UCL, discusses weather systems from The Atlantic that affect the UK and Europe.

Explosively deepening cyclones in the North Atlantic region are a well-known hazard to mariners. David sketches out the latest scientific findings on the origins of the strongest winds in these types of extratropical storms, focussing on our current understanding of the  mid- and low-level ‘jets’ that are responsible for the most extreme and localised winds.

The talk will be to appeal to sailors with knowledge and  appreciation of the weather from the basic level upwards. Case studies of recent and historical storms, including the infamous ‘Fastnet Race storm’, 1979 and the ‘Great October storm’ of 1987 will be discussed.
